Oxford Bar

Hide and Seek

The Oxford Bar, known as the Ox, is a recurring pub in the Rebus novels and a meeting place shared by John Rebus, many of the series’ characters, and author Ian Rankin. Its presence reaches beyond the characters’ regular visits: the pub’s owner, John Gates, also lent his name to one of the medical examiners called in to assist with investigations.

A recurring meeting place

John Rebus and many characters who appear in the novels are regulars at the Oxford Bar. The pub’s importance rests on this recurrence: it forms part of the characters’ shared social world across the series, rather than appearing only as a setting for a single investigation. Ian Rankin is also among its regulars.

Connection to the investigations

The Oxford Bar’s link to the novels extends into their investigative world through its owner, John Gates. One of the regular medical examiners called in to assist with cases is named after him, carrying the pub’s real-world association into the series’ cast of professional characters.
